Northwestern University Knight Lab sits between the Medill School of Journalism and the McCormick School of Engineering, building and testing technology for how news gets reported, told, and read.

My work covers embedded electronics and radio on one side and software and language systems on the other. I also design and maintain the lab's DevOps and support systems, so most of what the lab ships goes out through infrastructure I run.

My projects at the lab

  • SensorGrid — deployable air quality sensing networks, the data platform above them, and the sensor journalism work around both
  • Privacy Mirror — showing people what their devices broadcast
  • Exploring Software Defined Radio — opening the spectrum for reporting
  • Creative Co-author — a drafting tool for first drafts
  • Visual Recipes — design research on instructions
  • NATO in Chicago — coverage and conversation around the 2012 summit
  • SearchMinutes — public meeting transcription and search; rebuilt the pipeline on Whisper for Michigan Radio's handover to the Associated Press
  • News Compass — tracing science reporting back to the papers it cites
  • Overstory — news arcs read against their history, their precedents and the frameworks that explain them
  • City Hall Monitor — searchable index of Chicago City Council records
  • Knight Lab Tools — deployment, provisioning, content extraction, hashtag recommendation, and curation services
